Hello friends, and welcome back to your weekly piggy bank booster AKA SammyStats10k Best Bets. This week we are back with the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.
Typically around this time in the PGA season, we see less and less star golfers as they head across the pond and prepare for the British Open The Open Championship. The field this week may be seen as some below averages competition, but from a handicapping standpoint, these are the tournaments we circle on the calendar.
Unfortunately, our hot streak cooled off last week but we are coming back with some revenge this week in a tournament we tend to have a good grasp on. Detroit Golf Club is one of the more popular courses in Michigan topping out as a 7200 yard par 72. Scoring should be like last week; relatively low as the fairways are wide and we see an additional 2 par 5’s.
Based on some stats in the past here at Detroit Golf Club, we know that iron play is very important as well as driving distance so this week we will be targeting those who have strong strengths in both those areas. As always, short game stats is crucial in any tournament, so we will also be targeting those players as a bonus.
SammyStats10K Best Bets
This week, we have found 5 golfers that we are backing that I feel fairly confident here. These golfers have checked the boxes and coming off promising performances with their games shaping up for the British Open.
Rickie Fowler
Rickie has played very well this year which has been a pleasant surprise to the golf world. In Fowlers last 8 events on the PGA tour he’s had 7 top 20 finishes and a missed cut with three of those being top 10 finishes. Rickie has been sizzling on the golf course and we tend to see that continue especially here in Detroit. Rick has his game firing on all cylinders.
Rickie Fowler Top 20 (-115) Outright Winner (+1400)
Justin Thomas
JT is coming off a top 10 finish for the first time in awhile last week. He finally looked like old JT, or the JT we’ve seen for so long. This seems like the perfect spot to back Justin this week. A pretty average field and a perfect tournament he can start gaining some momentum back into his golf game. He’s simply too good to pass on especially at this venue. Putting all those factors into consideration, we are jumping on JT.
Justin Thomas top 20 (+130) Justin Thomas Outright Winner (+1800)
Sungjae Im
As many of you know, we’ve tailed Sungjae for many tournaments this year and it’s for good reason. Sungjae is a top 20 machine. While he’s struggled in some recent tournaments, his iron play and consistency with the driver shapes up perfectly for him at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Im, again simply has too much talent to not get himself into contention come the weekend.
Sungjae Im Top 20 (+110) Outright Winner (+2000)
Tom Kim
Similar story to JT, Tom Kim started out his PGA tour career with 2 wins in his first 8 starts but has slowed down since. That being said, Kim has been playing better and showed some positive signs last week at the Travelers with a top 30 finish. This week is the perfect fit for Tom Kim and we find enough value in him this week to pull the trigger. I expect to see TK in contention from the start.
Tom Kim top 20 (+150) Outright Winner (+2200)
Harris English
Last but not least, our final golfer we will be backing is Harris English. Harris is coming off 4 top 20 finishes in his last 8 tournaments and a top 10 at the US Open. English has been finding his groove recently in a year that started off very poorly. We find unbelievable value in Harris this week and feel good enough to take a shot. I tend to always target a long shot and feel Harris has the potential to deliver.
Harris English top 20 (+220) Outright Winner (+4300)
Enjoy the Rocket Mortgage Classic and, as always, please wager responsibly.
