Start Believing, The Timberwolves Can Win The NBA Championship

I wish I could say I saw this coming, but how can any Minnesota sports fan say that after the misery we have suffered for the last 30+ years? Sure, the Timberwolves had the best defensive team in the NBA all season. And sure, they held the number one seed in the Western Conference for the majority of the year. And yes, they showed flashes that made us all think, “Is this the year?” Well, Wolves fans, it is. This team is an absolute BUZZSAW. Folks, your Minnesota Timberwolves have what it takes to win an NBA championship.

Taking Souls On Defense

Jaden McDaniels and Nickeil Alexander-Walker straight up banished Jamal Murray to Azkaban in game two of this series. Naz Reid and KAT had the best player in the world in shambles. They made Nikola Jokić look less ‘Joker’ and more “court jester”. And to have that incredible of a defensive performance without the anchor of your defense and soon-to-be defensive player of the year, Rudy Gobert, is just about jaw dropping. The Nuggets are the defending NBA champions but you’d never realize it through two games this series. Not only did the Timberwolves snatch their soul on the defensive end, they had them acting like seventh graders when their parents take their phone away. It’s truly beautiful basketball.

Bench Comes Up Big Again

The physical and relentless defense this Wolves team has is an absolute weapon, but the depth they have off the bench is impossible to match. Without Rudy in the lineup for game two, guys like Naz Reid, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Kyle Anderson stepping up was crucial. All three played 25+ minutes and dominated on both ends of the floor. The Wolves’ bench has outscored the Nuggets’ bench by 22 through two games of this series. This has allowed Chris Finch and Micah Nori to send infinite waves of pressure at Jokić and the rest of the Nuggets’ offense.

Anthony Edwards Continues to Shine

I’ve been a Timberwolves fan since birth, and I didn’t think it would ever be possible to have a player like Ant-Man on my favorite team. All it took was decades of countless draft blunders (passing on Steph Curry TWICE) and failed free agent signings (F*** You Jimmy Buckets) to land an absolute mega-star. Edwards finished with 27 points on 11-17 shooting and seven assists, continuing his 2023-2024 coming out party as the future face of the NBA. He is averaging a ridiculous 32.3 PPG on 54% shooting through six playoff games this year. He has played absolute lock down perimeter defense on some of the NBA’s best guards. Oh and I forgot to mention, he’s probably three to five years away from his prime. He’s literally the same age as me.

Start Believing, This Team Has the IT Factor

The Wolves have shown us who they are all season long; Tough, physical, in your face and disciplined. They’ve got a superstar leader that can carry the team on his back, a trusty side kick there to lessen the burden and a plethora of feisty and talented role players ready to steal your lunch money. This series is far from over, but we are quickly treading into uncharted waters with how good this team is. I wouldn’t know what a championship team looks like if it smacked me on the ass. But this squad sure doesn’t look or feel like anything else I have witnessed in my 22 years of Minnesota sports fandom. So why not start to believe it? This is it. This is our time. The Timberwolves can win an NBA Championship. Howl, baby!
