Week 8: College Hockey Rankings, Betting Lines, & Preview

Gophers Hockey NCAA

Every conference seems to be able to brag about SOMETHING when it comes to the College Hockey Rankings this year. Everyone, that is, except for the CCHA. While the rest of the nation is riding the Battle Bus with OG Fortnite’s return, they all decided to hop on the struggle bus instead.

The NCHC has the number one overall team and two of the top four in both polls. Hockey East has BC and BU which refuse to play in snoozers and have guaranteed future NHL stars skating for ’em. The Big 10 is DOMINATING all of college hockey this year. How they haven’t won a national title is so far beyond me, I can’t explain it. The ECAC may have lost Harvard as a reliable source for wins, but Quinnipiac has remained consistent and Cornell has been a MENACE. Hell, even Atlantic Hockey has RIT shaping back up and nabbing a National Ranking position.

The sport is more fun with the blue-bloods returning to prominence, but having an entire conference missing has been a let-down. The CCHA has turned into Pac-12 football where the top teams get beat by nobodies and none of them can win out of conference. I don’t expect it to last and eventually, SOMEONE has to emerge, but at the Thanksgiving “break” this has been the biggest surprise of the season.

Updated Weekly Picks

There is no point in bringing up last weekend. The picks were flat-out bad. The fact of the matter is we’re still winners this season and plus money overall! That means we can still afford to be BOLD and take picks like SCSU -1.5 with our nuts on the table. You can’t hit home runs if you quit swinging!

If you think you’re smarter than me, prove it. You can go on BettorEdge and either set your own lines or pick up one that someone else (me) has already thrown out there. I’ll be putting affordable lines out there on each of these if you’re just looking to “dabble” a bit. Just make sure to use β€œ10K” at sign-up.

Explaining the Minnesota Rankings:

No explaining what’s going on in Minnesota this season. The Gophers have stumbled more than your uncle trying to get off the couch for the first time after slugging a dozen barley pops during the Lions game. SCSU faceplanted and then came back stronger than they were last season. UMD hasn’t won in over a month. As crazy as all of that is, the CCHA is more backwards than ever. NOBODY can explain with any sort of reason who is going to win from one weekend to the next. Until someone starts to emerge there, they’re all 4-6.

1. University of Minnesota – Gophers
2. St. Cloud State – Huskies
3. University of Minnesota, Duluth – Bulldogs
4-6. St. Thomas University – Tommies
4-6. Minnesota State – Mavericks
4-6. Bemidji State – Beavers

National College Hockey Rankings Roundup

Wisconsin’s reign as the number-one team in the nation was short-lived. After getting swept by Sparty, the Badgers took a tumble out of favor from the voters. North Dakota at the top just looks right. It pains me to say it, for so many reasons, but it does. Hell, the top ten just feels like it’s totally correct at this point. Of course, it’s going to change again, but these teams came to play this season and deserve the recognition. No notes on the top twenty from me this week.

Nov 23rd College Hockey Rankings Roundup

Note:Β The National Rankings RoundupΒ weighs each of the ranking sources instead of treating them all as equal. This takes into account the credibility of the source, potential committee influence, what data they utilize, evident bias, and amount of teams ranked.

Minnesota College Hockey Games

With it being Thanksgiving, everyone has enough to digest without me taking up your free time. I’m never going to be able to keep this blog under 1,500 words, but we’re gonna go for quick hits in the matchups. Strictly vibes…as originally intended.

#7 Michigan State @ #8 Minnesota – Fri & Sun, Nov. 24/26

Spartans vs Gophers

Stats:

26.8 β€“ PP% – 18.8
85.9 – PK% – 80.6
49.6 – FO% – 49.2
1.386 – GF/GA – 1.310
.908 – SV% – .919

Vibes: Sparty is hotter than Megan Fox in Transformers right now. Minnesota is not bullying their way through the Big 10 like they did a year ago. The fact of the matter is Minnesota will NOT be able to blow out Michigan in every game like they did five times last year. Bank on it.

Prediction: Sparty takes Friday and Minnesota fights back for a series split at home.

#14 Michigan @ #16/17 St Cloud State – Fri & Sat, Nov 24/25

Wolverines vs Huskies

Stats:

35.0 β€“ PP% – 20.0
71.9 – PK% – 84.1
55.4– FO% – 53.8
1.488 – GF/GA – 1.276
.908 β€“ SV% – .903

Vibes: Why I think that St Cloud has any business winning the Friday game is a mystery to me. The fact that I think they can cover the Puck Line is borderline psychotic. At least I’m self-aware enough to admit it. The ONLY thing they’re leading in this matchup is the PK, but they shouldn’t be ashamed of any of their production this season.

Prediction: SCSU pulls out a dominant win at home on Friday, but the Wolverines bite back on Saturday.

Bemidji State @ #1 North Dakota – Fri & Sat, Nov 24/25

Beavers vs Fighting Hawks

Stats:

16.4 β€“ PP% – 17.4
65.8 – PK% – 84.2
46.8 β€“ FO% – 55.3
0.778 – GF/GA – 1.720
.867 β€“ SV% – .914

Vibes:Β NoDak is dominating in every statistical category you can think of. Bemidji will be without their best goaltender yet again. North Dakota is riding high as the hottest team in the country and the new number-one team in the nation. None of this bodes well for the boys in Bemidji. It may be a short road trip, but the bus rides back down Highway 2 are going to feel long after the whooping they receive.

Prediction: NoDak sweeps.

Michigan Tech @ Minnesota State – Fri & Sat, Nov 24/25

Huskies vs Mavericks

Stats:

21.7 β€“ PP% – 17.1
70.8 – PK% – 80.6
51.9 β€“ FO% – 49.1
0.833 – GF/GA – 1.167
.888 β€“ SV% – .899

Vibes:Β Neither of these teams are happy with where they’re at this season. Michigan Tech was supposed to be cruising on their way to a CCHA championship. The Mavericks thought they’d be able to retain SOME of the talent and results from being at the top of the conference for so long. Neither of those things are true. Despite the disappointments, expect this one to be hard-fought with pride on the line.

Prediction: Split series with each winning a 1-goal game.

Lake Superior State @ St Thomas – Fri & Sat, Nov 24/25

Lakers vs Tommies

Stats:

20.0 β€“ PP% – 8.2
85.4 – PK% – 71.1
44.5 β€“ FO% – 51.1
1.075 – GF/GA – 1.194
.898 β€“ SV% – .907

Vibes:Β The special teams struggles of St Thomas has been the difference in many of their losses this season. With the nation’s scoring leader in Jared Westcott looming on Lake State’s roster, they’ll have to play a tight game to avoid another disappointing loss. The Tommies still might not be eligible for postseason play, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want to own the bragging rights within their conference.

Prediction: Tommies win one convincingly and settle for a SOW in the other.

Other College Hockey Games to Watch

#5 Boston University vs #16/17 Cornell – Sat, Nov 25 (MSG)

Black Bears vs Terriers

Stats:

26.8 – PP% – 15.2
78.0 β€“ PK% – 76.7
50.7 β€“ FO% – 51.6
1.378 β€“ GF/GA – 1.444
.904 β€“ SV% – .894

Vibes:Β Imagine getting to play in Madison Square Garden as a College Hockey player. That’s what these two get to do on Saturday. I rag on East Coast hockey in one way or another every week this blog comes out, but the people out there are doing everything they can to grow the sport too. Suffice it to say, those East-Coast boys get to have all the fun. Speaking of fun, this one is a total toss-up for me and should be a joy to watch. Of course, Celebrini and Hutson are threats to go off every night, but Cornell plays a heavy and punishing game.

Prediction: BU continues their run as Ian Shane struggles to return to form. Terriers Dub.

#9 Providence @ #13 Arizona State – Fri & Sun, Nov 24/26

Friars vs Sun Devils

Stats:

19.2 β€“ PP% – 29.1
88.1 – PK% – 78.6
52.3 β€“ FO% – 50.0
1.680 – GF/GA – 1.303
.914 – SV% – .901

Vibes: The Friars were standing on the doorstep of a top-five ranking a little over a week ago. Now they’re on the edge of falling out of the top ten. ASU might be a bunch of try-hards with their glitter jerseys and new debut threads coming out year after year, but they’re fun. They crank out big wins and are becoming a staple in College Hockey. Some are saying the best team in the desert.

Prediction: ASU wins on “Blackout Friday” but can’t rehydrate to wrap up the series and splits the weekend.

#10/12 New Hampshire @ #20 RIT – Fri & Sat, Nov 24/25

Wildcats vs Tigers

Stats:

22.2 – PP% – 15.2
93.3 – PK% – 84.6
46.2 – FO% – 52.9
1.450 β€“ GF/GA – 1.333
.909 β€“ SV% – .921

Vibes: UNH has been THE surprise coming out of Hockey East this season. That’s saying a lot with the resurgence of the Maine Black Bears dominating the headlines out there. How the Wildcats are racking up the ranked wins with their roster is IMPRESSIVE to put it lightly. Their coach has got the boys humming and that penalty kill is one of the best in the nation. I want to respect the Atlantic…but there’s only room for one big cat in my heart this weekend.

Prediction: UNH sweeps on the road.

Previous Previews & Picks:

Don’t know whether you can trust the picks or input? I don’t blame you. I’m not anywhere near a β€œBig J”. In fact, I’m just some idiot with an outlet. An idiot who watches more college hockey than 99% of the nation, but an idiot nonetheless. Take that how you will.
